Dlink router where it belongs

I bought a d-Link DI-524 wireless router with the intention of using it with my iPhone. A lovely gentleman at a local electronics shop here told me that I would have absolutely no problems with it working with the phone.

He was wrong.

More often than not, the iPhone either couldn’t connect to the router, would drop the connection or just couldn’t (or wouldn’t) find the router.

When the router and the phone did decide to play nice with each other, the range was perhaps 12 meters at best.

After seeing that others had problems with their d-link routers I splurged and bought a NETGEAR WNB2100 router.

Lo and behold, the NETGEAR router works.

A few tips:

1. Turn off your computer and disconnect the modem from the power source. Wait about five minutes.

2. Connect the router to the modem. Turn the modem and the computer back on. Do not turn on the router just yet. Wait about five more minutes.

3. Turn the router on.

4. If the admin interface URL in the NETGEAR instructions is invalid (routerlogin.net), try the router IP addy. For more info, see Configuring WEP here.

5. Set your connection and admin interface passwords and you should be good to go.

6. As for the technical data (IP address, TCP/IP settings, DNS, and so on), I didn’t have to input any values. They were obtained automatically (I’m a Cablecom Switzerland customer).

Nachtmarkt

I’ve started making handmade soap again. For those new to this: I’ve been making soap since 1997 or 1998.

I got the urge again a few months back.

The photo above is from a market I sold my wares at last weekend.

A friend sent the Nin quote to me during a Skype chat yesterday. I loved it so much, I made an iPhone wallpaper with it…and kept going with other quotes I love. Feel free to use them on your iPhone. I hope you find the words as inspirational as I do.

iPhone 911

My iPhone died tonight. I believe it overheated.

I’ve had it since the end of October.

Most reports I’ve read about this issue are from around July this year. I haven’t heard of any overheating recently.

Have you?

Update: Thanks to John Abell! “Hold down both power and home buttons for 5 seconds. If that doesn’t work, release & repeat. Sometimes three’s a charm.”

From the shop: Homeless in The Land of Dreams

RT | Online Journalism | Saturday, December 19th, 2009

As America experiences an increase in ‘first-time’ homelessness, activists bemoan city ordinances that keep charities from lending a helping hand, perpetuate laws that stigmatize the homeless and often lead to harassment, beatings, rapes and even human torching – much of which is available for your entertainment on ‘reality TV,’ Julianne Geiger writes for ISN Security Watch.
