A word to the wise: Businesses that use social media

RT | Social media, Tips, Web 2.0 | Sunday, January 11th, 2009

I try to stay away from the social media advice giving game for businesses. There are quite a few folks who are more adept at doing this than I am. Also, I cringe when I see announcements like “Let me tell you how to make a million dollars using Twitter!”

But, there are two things bugging me that I need to toss out there to folks in business who use social media.

Note: These are only my opinions and I’m only giving them as a consumer.

Your mileage may vary.

1. Don’t sign up for every service out there and then send your customers a slew of sites where they can “find you.” It’s confusing.

If you’re on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Ning, LinkedIn, MySpace and Plaxo…and you have three blogs… where is the MAIN place that someone can get a message to you? Where is your actual community? You can’t be all things to all people. Pick one or two services (probably Twitter and something else). There *is* such a thing as too many choices.

2. If you *must* have a presence in six or seven services, try directing your customers to your FriendFeed page with all of your stuff going on there. Let that FriendFeed page be the MAIN page.

Again, these are only my opinions and I’m only a consumer. But, my attention span can only handle so much and I think we’re heading toward a social media critical mass.
